A Day Trip to Salzburg, Austria
We had a wonderful day trip to Salzburg from Munich by car.
Strolling through Salzburg, can’t you just hear the Sound of Music in the background?
Salzach River

Makartsteg Bridge or the Love Locks Bridge over Salzach
As we walked across the bridge, there were many locks attached to the bridge fence. Couples inscribed their initials on the locks and then threw the keys into the river to symbolize unbreakable love for eternity. A wonderful symbol in a beautifully scenic place.

The Historic Center of the City of Salzburg, or Alstadt, is located on the left and right banks of Salzach. The University of Salzburg is also located along the bank.

Felsenreitschule
It is a theater in Salzburg and is often used as venue for Salzburg Festivals.

Within the walls of Saint Peter’s Abbey is a restaurant that dates back to 803 AD. We wondered g fresh the food would be given that the restaurant is over a millennium old, but it was good. Try the crepes! Steak also not bad.

Dessert was awesome – Salzburg Nockerln is the local favorite! And we loved it. Apparently this wonderful dessert is shaped to represent the hillsides surrounding the city, and the powdered sugar is dusted on top to resemble the snow covered peaks. But the best part is the taste, a delicious sweet doughy soufflé baked to a light brown with sugar on the outside. Magnifique!

Salzburg Cathedral
This cathedral is a century baroque era cathedral in the Roman Catholic arch diocese of this region. originally built in the seventh century, it was destroyed by fire and invading armies at least twice and reconstructed. Beautiful!

Getreidsgasse – Old Town in Salzburg
The old town in this area is very interesting, various smaller markets and street shops and interesting little restaurants. The architecture in this area is also interesting with markings over the doorways and progressively smaller windows as you go up into the higher floors of the buildings combine this with the fact that this is the birthplace of Mozart, and you have a very interesting place to visit!

Mozarts Geburtshaus
Enjoying a tour at Mozart’s Birthplace and old town Salzburg.

Hohensalzburg Fortress in the Backdrops
You can see this fortress in the backdrop of the picture. They have been archaeological excavated in this area, which indicate that a Roman fort was located here. Really cool architecture!

Mirabell Palace and Garden
This palace was originally built in 1606 by the river outside the walls of the city, for the prince and his mistress. They were then deposed, when a competing lord attacked and kicked them out. It went through a number of different transitions and changes of ownership, ultimately winding up in the palace that we saw today. Interestingly, this is where the famous sound of music “do re mi” was filmed.

The Silent Night
On the way back to Munich, snow was falling as we made a detour to visit the Silent Night Chapel outside of Salzburg. My favorite Christmas song, Silent Night, was first played on Christmas eve in 1818 in this church (formally called Saint Nicholas church, and now called the Silent Night chapel) outside of Salzburg. The lyrics were written by local priest Joseph Mohr, and the accompanying melody was composed by schoolmaster Frank Gruber. Kevan and I were the only ones here when we visited, what an amazing piece of Christian history. We felt great to be here with the snow falling on a wonderful wintry night!
